Stake runs a Finnish-language site and serves Finnish players, but it is not licensed in Finland and the country is changing its gambling law. What that means for you, in plain terms: legality, the 2027 licensing system, tax and payments.

The situation today

Finland has run gambling as a state monopoly under Veikkaus. Playing on a foreign site has never been an offence for the player; the law restricts operators and marketing, not individuals. Stake serves Finland, offers the site in Finnish and accepts Finnish players under its Curaçao licence. The practical consequences are the ones on is Stake safe: no Finnish regulator to complain to, no Finnish self-exclusion register, and your own limits as the main protection.

The 2027 licensing system

Finland is moving from the monopoly to a licensing model. Under the reform, private operators can apply for a Finnish licence for online casino and betting, with licensed operation expected to start in 2027 and a new supervisory authority in charge. Licensed operators will be allowed to market in Finland; unlicensed ones will face payment blocking and other enforcement tools. Whether Stake applies for a Finnish licence is Stake’s decision and has not been announced. Until an operator holds a Finnish licence it remains unsupervised by Finnish authorities. We will update this page when the position changes.

Tax on winnings

Under Finnish income tax law, gambling winnings from operators licensed in an EU or EEA state are tax-free. Winnings from an operator licensed elsewhere, which currently includes Stake under its Curaçao licence, are in principle taxable income that you report yourself. Separately, selling crypto on an exchange to cash out is a disposal for capital gains purposes regardless of where the crypto came from. Keep exchange statements and your Stake transaction history. This is not tax advice; the Finnish Tax Administration’s guidance on gambling and on virtual currencies is the authority.

Deposits and withdrawals from Finland

Exchange, card processor and withdrawal to bank

RouteHow it works from FinlandOur note
Crypto from an exchangeBuy USDT, LTC or BTC on a mainstream exchange with a Finnish bank card or transfer, send to StakeThe reliable route; stablecoin on Tron or Polygon is cheapest
Card purchase on StakeThird-party processor sells you crypto directly on the deposit pageWorks, but Finnish banks sometimes decline gambling-linked processors
Withdrawal to bankWithdraw crypto to your exchange, sell, transfer euros to your bankMinutes on the Stake side, one or two banking days after

Bank blocking does not touch the exchange route

Finnish banks may flag or block payments they identify as gambling-related, and the 2027 reform includes tools to block payments to unlicensed operators. The exchange route is unaffected by that because the bank sees a crypto purchase, not a casino. Walkthrough on crypto deposits.

Help and self-exclusion

Finnish self-exclusion tools do not cover Stake. Use Stake’s own limits and self-exclusion under Settings, and set a deposit limit before the first deposit. Peluuri offers free, confidential help in Finnish on 0800 100 101 and at peluuri.fi. More on responsible gambling.

The deal for Finnish players

The Stake deal is the same in Finland as anywhere: code PACTBONUS at registration for the 200% welcome bonus on deposits up to $1,000, 3.5% rakeback on the house edge, and a place on the $30,000 monthly leaderboard. Bonuses and speed versus protection and tax

This is the real trade-off for a Finnish player: Stake wins on bonuses, games and speed, a licensed site wins on protection and tax. We say so because pretending otherwise is how affiliate sites lose readers.

Finnish banks and gambling payments

Finnish banks already screen card payments with gambling merchant codes and some decline them outright; the reform gives the authority power to order blocks on payments to named unlicensed operators. In practice this affects the card-purchase route on Stake’s deposit page, which runs through a payment processor the bank can identify. Buying crypto on a regulated exchange with your bank is a different transaction, is not blocked, and is the route we recommend anyway for cost and reliability. Never try to disguise a gambling payment to your bank; it is not necessary and it can get the account closed.

Tax: a worked example

Illustrative only, not advice. A Finnish player deposits €500 worth of USDT, plays, and withdraws USDT now worth €900. Two things may be reportable: the €400 gambling win, because Stake is licensed outside the EU/EEA, and any gain or loss on the crypto itself between buying and selling it, which is a capital-gains matter. Losses on other gambling in the same year are not generally deductible. The Tax Administration publishes guidance on both gambling income and virtual currencies; keep the exchange statements and your Stake transaction history so the numbers can be shown. If the amounts are material, ask an accountant.

Why you see Finnish Stake streams

Stake is not allowed to market in Finland, and it does not. What you see are sponsored streamers, this site included, who play on Stake and publish content about it. That is legal for the streamer, disclosed on every page here, and it is why a Finnish audience knows the brand at all. The reform will change what licensed operators may do; it will not change the disclosure you get from us, which is on how we review.

Checklist for a Finnish player

  1. Decide the monthly amount you can lose, and set it as a deposit limit on Stake before the first deposit.
  2. Open an exchange account and verify it now, not on the day you want to withdraw.
  3. Deposit a stablecoin on a cheap network; skip the card processor.
  4. Register with code PACTBONUS for the 200% welcome bonus and 3.5% rakeback; decline the deposit bonus if you do not want wagering.
  5. Complete Stake’s identity verification the same day.
  6. Keep exchange statements and the Stake transaction history for tax.
  7. Save Peluuri’s number: 0800 100 101.

Common questions

Is Stake legal in Finland?

Playing is not an offence for the player. Stake is not licensed in Finland; the country's licensing system opens in 2027 and Stake has not announced an application.

Are Stake winnings taxed in Finland?

In principle yes, because Stake is licensed outside the EU/EEA. EU/EEA-licensed operators' winnings are tax-free. Crypto sales are separately taxable. Check the Tax Administration's guidance.

Can I deposit with a Finnish bank card?

Indirectly: buy crypto on an exchange with the card, then send it to Stake. The card route on Stake's own deposit page is sometimes declined by Finnish banks.

Is there a Finnish version of Stake?

Yes, the site is available in Finnish, and this guide exists in Finnish at pactbonus.com/fi.

Will Stake get a Finnish licence?

Stake has not announced an application. Until it holds one it stays unsupervised by Finnish authorities and its winnings remain, in principle, taxable.

Can my bank block a Stake deposit?

The card route on Stake's deposit page can be declined or blocked. Buying crypto on an exchange with your bank is a separate transaction and is not.

Are Stake streams legal in Finland?

The streamer publishing content about a site they play on is legal and is disclosed as sponsored. Stake itself does not market in Finland.
